Newport News, the city of Newport News, Virginia, has been one of my favorite places for over 20 years. It is not just because of the food and the activities, but also because of the people, the diversity, and the great music scene. It is a special place.
And because of the great music scene, it is the home of the National Symphony Orchestra. Now, I have been to the NSO before, but it is always a bit like seeing a small show, or the latest edition of a popular Broadway musical. The NSO is an eclectic group of musicians from around the country, all of whom have different styles and approaches to their craft. But they all have one thing in common: A love of classical music.
As you may have seen, the NSO (or National Symphony Orchestra) is currently on tour, and is very popular. In one week, the orchestra will be in the capital, New York, and then they will head to Boston. Tickets are selling out fast. But this week, they had a new album and concert to promote. The NSO is often called the premier orchestra in the world, and the NSO has been known to perform at the White House.
I asked the musician behind ymca newport new music, Michael Stuhlmacher, about the concert. He said it was a great experience for the orchestra, but then he added, “it really is a piece of art, like the concert itself.” His comment made me think of the famous German composer, Franz Liszt, who said that if you really listen to the music, it will reveal itself to you in a way that makes you think about the music.
My point is that the orchestra is an amazing thing. It creates its own world. And the NSO is another great example of how music really does reveal itself in a way that makes you think about it.
The NSO is a unique instrument that sounds like it’s made of a million different pieces of wood. This is because it is comprised of multiple strings each of which is strung together into a single string with a diaphragm that vibrates, creating a different sound when it’s placed over that string. This is extremely useful as a way of creating aural diversity that isn’t possible to do with other instruments.
It’s one of the things that makes the NSO so fascinating for musicians. It’s also one of the things that makes the NSO so dangerous for musicians. It’s hard to make a very good stringed instrument out of multiple pieces of wood. The NSO is very difficult to make, and requires a lot of skills and tools to work.
It takes a lot of time, patience, skill, and practice to make a good stringed instrument like the NSO. It takes about 10 hours to create one piece of wood, but if you use a lot of different pieces of wood you will end up with a lot of different sounds. There are a lot of different ways this can be done, but only one that makes sense.
And that makes it sound like I’m in the opposite camp of the NSO. I’m not suggesting that you make a stringed instrument like the NSO out of wood, but I am suggesting that if you have the time and ability to make one, you should make it.
Well said, and I wouldn’t consider myself the expert on the NSO, but I would hazard to say that most of the time when I hear a stringed instrument I’m not doing so out of love for the instrument, more out of fear of it. I’m in awe of the sounds that I make with it, and I consider it a good way to get a feel for just how fast the human body can build one of these sounds.
