The best things to do in Nice include wandering down the renowned Promenade des Anglais, discovering every nook and cranny of the charming old town, learning about the city’s extensive art history, and enjoying delectable Niçoise cuisine.

10 Things To Do in Nice, France

Nice, France, is the focal point of the French Riviera. Nice has so many enjoyable things to do that you could happily spend a week there. Continue reading for my top recommendations for what to discover and do in this dazzling French Riviera city.

1. Rise the Colline du Château for spectacular views

Ascend the steps to the Colline du Château for stunning views over Nice’s roofs and the turquoise blue seas of the Baie des Anges. This beautiful, forested park on the eastern outskirts of the old town was once home to a medieval fortress and military walls, which were demolished by Louis XIV in 1706.

2. Enjoy the delights of Niçoise street food

There are many delectable Niçoise street foods to choose from including chickpea pancakes, caramelized onion tarts, and anchovy tarts offered by the well-known restaurant Chez Pipo in Port Lympia, or from the Chez Thérésa cart at the Cours Saleya market in Old Nice. There are many fine restaurants around the city, such as Lou Balico in front of the mosque Chez Tintin near the Libération market,  MAMAC museum, or La Gratta beside Port Lympia.

3. Discover some of Matisse’s most famous works of art

It was in Nice that Henri Matisse (1869–1954) spent almost 40 years as one of the most well-known artists of France. It houses paintings, sculptures, sketches, and works on paper that is considered among the best in the world, which can be seen at the Musée Matisse in Cimiez.

4. Promenade des Anglais: walk along there

A visit to the Niçoise sculptor Sabine Géraudie’s La Chaise de SAB (2014) pays homage to the well-known blue chairs along the coast. See the art-deco Palais de la Méditerranée (1929), the pink-domed Hôtel Negresco (1913), and the pink-domed Hôtel Negresco (1913).

5. Explore the lush Cimiez neighborhood

The picturesque neighborhood of Cimiez, situated on a hill, is home to opulent homes, two significant art museums with Matisse and Chagall artwork, Roman ruins, and the Musée Archéologique de Nice.

6. Visit the Parc du Mont Boron and then go hiking

There is 11km of hiking routes, picnic spots, and breathtaking views at the Parc du Mont Boron, located just outside Nice. The hilltop woodland covers 57 hectares of Aleppo pines, olive trees, and holm oaks.

7. Have some Italian ice cream

While you’re in Nice’s Old Town, you should indulge in some authentic Italian ice cream. “Azzurro” is positioned on Rossetti Square, not far from another well-known but less-than-excellent ice cream shop, Fenocchio. The quality of the materials used at Azzurro is substantially higher, and their cones are homemade, which has nothing to do with taste.

8. Check out the Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Nice,  The most significant Orthodox religious structure outside of Russia is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a historical landmark. Therefore, it is obvious that it belongs on this list of the most famous attractions in Nice.

9. Celebrate the Carnival scenery

Each year in February for two weeks, Nice Carnival is among the most renowned and biggest occasions in the world. The grand floats and the well-known flower procession on the Promenade des Anglais, popularly known as the flower “battle,” draw thousands of onlookers to the celebrations each year.

10. Tour the Vieux Nice’s narrow streets

You’ll love wandering the tiny, twisting alleys and alleyways, and you won’t be able to resist admiring the colorful facades of the buildings here. Discover the architectural wonders like the 17th-century Palais Lascaris and the Cathedral Ste-Reparate before exploring the bustling markets and café terraces of the Cours Saleya.

Final Thoughts

Whatever your reason for coming to Nice, we hope that these ideas have given you some insight into what to do while you’re here. These are just ten suggestions that stood out to me as a tourist, but there are plenty of other things to do in Nice, France. Nice is one of those coastal cities that you visit for the beach and stay for the city. Hopefully, you will find these ten things to do in Nice helpful when planning your trip.
